Damen Shipyards Den Helder has completed the maintenance and modernisation of the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN) vessel HNLMS Snellius.

The hydrographic survey vessel underwent a midlife upgrade and necessary multi-annual maintenance simultaneously at Den Helder yard. A part of the upgrade works was carried out in the covered dock of Damen Shiprepair in Harlingen.

The upgraded vessel was delivered to RNLN and is ready to resume hydrographic work.

Dutch Ministry of Defence’s Defensie Materieel Organisation (DMO) and the Directie Materële Instandhouding were responsible for this maintenance work.

In 2019, Damen Shipyards Den Helder secured the contract to renovate and upgrade three RNLN vessels, namely HNLMS Pelikaan, HNLMS Snellius and HNLMS Luymes.

With HNLMS Pelikaan and HNLMS Luymes delivered earlier, the completion of the HNLMS Snellius upgrade marks the conclusion of the programme.

The maintenance programme involved replacing or overhauling several of HNLMS Snellius’ platforms.

In a statement, Damen said: “The assignment was carried out in close collaboration with numerous partners from the Dutch maritime industry such as Nevesbu, Wartsila, Braspenning, Eekels, RH Marine, Bakker Sliedrecht and Kongsberg.

“Many of the platforms and Sewaco systems were replaced or overhauled during the project. A number of works were also carried out to prepare the fifteen-year-old vessel for the second half of her lifecycle.”

HNLMS Luymes (A803) and HNLMS Snellius (A802) are used for mapping the seabed. The vessels were built by Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding (DSNS) in collaboration with the Dutch maritime industry.

Last month, Damen Naval signed a contract with ship classification society DNV to provide certification services for the German Navy’s new F126 frigates.
