The Royal Canadian Navy (RNC) has extended the existing in-service support contract for its 12 Halifax-class multi-role patrol frigates by three years.

The deal was awarded to Lockheed Martin Canada and includes the delivery of support services for the navy’s existing Halifax-class system prior to the vessels’ planned return to the shipyard for upgrade and modernisation works.

“The Lockheed Martin Canada In-Service Support team has delivered continuous support to the Halifax-class combat solution, command and control systems, and trainers for the past 25 years.”

Lockheed Martin Canada Rotary Mission Systems vice-president and general manager Gary Fudge said: “We are pleased by the vote of confidence from our Royal Canadian Navy customer to continue this existing relationship.

“As part of our Combat System Integrator portfolio, Lockheed Martin Canada has established a world-class in-service support team, which is also being recognised by our international customers.”

The existing in-service support contract was originally granted to the company in November 2008 with the award of the Halifax-class modernisation project.

Lockheed Martin is also responsible for providing combat management systems (CMS) support as part of the arrangement, which includes hardware and software support for the CMS 330, in addition to the CMS-to-combat-subsystem interfaces, ancillary systems and tools.

The support deal also covers the integration of new weapons, sensors and information sources.

Lockheed Martin Canada is working in close collaboration with shipyards and the RCN to replace major critical sensors, and command and control systems, as well as upgrade the operations room and deliver a suite of related simulation / training systems under the wider Halifax-class modernisation project.

The 12 frigates were initially commissioned into service with the RCN between 1992 and 1996.
