Marine technology company Kraken Robotics has signed a contract with the Canadian Government to offer Robotics as a Service (RaaS).
Funded under the Canadian Government’s ‘Innovative Solutions Canada’ programme, the $500k RaaS contract is for testing Kraken’s ultra-high resolution survey equipment with the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN).

The RCN’s Halifax-based Fleet Diving Unit Atlantic (FDU-A) is serving as the testing department for this service.
According to the company, the RCN has been ordered to develop and maintain a capability that can store advanced sonar imaging and data for its coasts.
This capability will also be implemented to national and international areas of interest.
The contract is scheduled for completion in March next year.

By GlobalDataKraken noted that the RaaS capability will be tested in two configurations.
In the first configuration, Kraken will deploy its KATFISH towed SAS sonar system and will integrate a Kraken Light Weight SAS (LW-SAS) aboard an FDU-A-owned Hydroid REMUS 100 autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV).
In the second, an untethered light weight SAS system will be deployed onboard RCN REMUS 100 AUV and tested with the above KATFISH system.
Kraken president and CEO Karl Kenny said: “Kraken is excited to be able to offer RaaS to the RCN as an ‘early adopter’ to augment existing RCN Route Survey with a Service offering based on the latest SAS technology available.
“Kraken seeks to offer our ‘Robotics as a Service’ globally, in particular to other Nato allies, and this contract for the RCN’s evaluation will serve as an excellent reference.
“The RCN’s objective comparison of the data from our RaaS offering against legacy sonar data will provide demonstrative evidence of the superior image resolution and accuracy of Kraken survey data.”
In September last year, Kraken Robotics signed a $36m contract with the Danish Ministry of Defence, Acquisition and Logistics Organization (DALO) for mine-hunting sonar equipment.
