CAE has received a contract to upgrade the Swedish Navy’s Naval Warfare Training System (NWTS) at the Swedish Naval Warfare Centre (NWC) in Karlskrona.

The contract was awarded by procurement agency Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV).

CAE developed the Swedish Navy’s NWTS under a contract awarded to the company in 2014. The comprehensive, simulation-based NWTS entered into service with the navy in 2016.

The system meets the training needs of the navy in sensor operations, command, control, communications, and computers (C4), and weapon systems.

CAE’s trainer suite provides the Swedish Navy with 52 student stations and 13 instructor operator stations to carry out training and rehearsals.

The student stations feature simulation systems for sonar, radar, and communications.

Swedish Naval Warfare Centre commander captain Magnus Jonsson said: “We are continually looking for ways to improve training and make the delivery of training at the NWC more efficient and effective.

“The upgrades to the NWTS will help us enhance the training delivered to sailors and officers in naval tactics, procedures and doctrine.”

Under the contract, CAE will conduct NWTS upgrades to support active sonar training and additional electronic warfare training capabilities. The enhancements will enable improved training scenarios.

The contract will also include the addition of computer-generated forces (CGF) entities to allow for simulation of both friendly and enemy forces to improve the training experience.

The CGF entities will help create a more realistic virtual training environment for the Swedish Navy personnel.

CAE vice-president and Europe/Africa general manager Marc-Olivier Sabourin said: “The Swedish NWTS and our ongoing support is a great example of CAE’s naval training systems integration capabilities.

“These Phase I upgrades and other upgrades planned in future development phases will continue to add functionality and capability to a training system that has become an integral part of Swedish Navy training.”
