The US Navy has awarded British multinational BAE Systems a prime contractor position to develop maritime operations and flight safety systems. The indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract covers orders over an eight-year period.

The contract covers large deck naval ships and new aircraft carriers. The deal will see BAE Systems also involved in refuelling and overhauling ships.

BAE Systems’ Integrated Defense Solutions vice president and general manager Mark Keeler said: “As a leading systems integrator, we continuously seek to broaden our support to the US Navy to advance its C5ISR capabilities.”

BAE Systems will work with the US Navy will enhance a variety of systems used for communications, command and control and intelligence.

Keeler added: “We are working with our defence customers to innovate our approach to systems development to better meet their ever-evolving mission requirements in alignment with construction and modernization priorities.”

The majority of the work will take place at the US Navy’s C4I-System Innovation Facility in Charleston, South Carolina. Additional work will be distributed across shipyards in the US.

BAE Systems was one of three contractors who bid for the contract covering the integration of future systems, engineering, assembly and testing for the navy.

The company recently announced contracts with the US Navy to increase the payload capacity of Virginia class submarines and a $70m contract to upgrade five Mk 45 naval gun systems.
