BAE Systems has announced new supply chain contracts worth more than £100m as part of the Royal Navy’s Type 26 frigate programme.

The five new contracts have been awarded to companies in Glasgow, Hartlepool, Nottingham, and Dorset.

UK Secretary of State Defence Ben Wallace said: “The Type 26 programme has proven itself in terms of cutting-edge design, international defence exports, and creating and sustaining British jobs.

“This latest round of contract awards will see companies from the south coast of England to the banks of the Clyde benefit from over 250 highly-skilled jobs and multi-million-pound investment.”

Under the contracts, Denholm Industrial will provide surface preparation and painting, while Malin will be responsible for vessel load out and float off. CBL will be in charge of cable and associated works, Kaefer for insulation products and installation services, and SCA for access and containment.

According to the company, construction has started on the last section of HMS Glasgow. It is the first of eight Type 26 advanced anti-submarine warfare frigates.

The Type 26 frigates will be equipped with the Sea Ceptor missile defence system, a new 5in main gun, and an Artisan 997 Medium Range Radar.

Set to replace anti-submarine Type 23 warships, Type 26 are also armed with a flexible mission bay, bow and towed array sonars, as well as a Merlin or Wildcat helicopter.
