The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) has decommissioned HMAS Newcastle and HMAS Success in Sydney at Garden Island, Fleet Base East.

HMAS Newcastle was commissioned in 1993 and has served the RAN for 25 years. The Adelaide-class guided-missile frigate was involved in operations in the Middle East, East Timor, and Persian Gulf.

The warship also conducted peacekeeping operations and several humanitarian operations.

Australia Defence Minister Linda Reynolds said: “HMAS Newcastle has served the Royal Australian Navy with distinction for over quarter of a century.

“I pay tribute to the ship’s company whose service on Newcastle over the years has contributed to security at sea, at home and abroad.”

HMAS Newcastle will be replaced by the Hobart-class guided missile destroyers.

The Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment (AOR) ship HMAS Success was inducted in 1986 and has since steamed almost one million nautical miles. The vessel is referred to as ‘First Lady of the Fleet’ and took part in 11 Rim of the Pacific exercises.

Australia Assistant Defence Minister Alex Hawke said: “Success will be missed. She has been such an integral part of navy over the past 33 years that many sailors and officers will not know the fleet without her.”

A new oil replenishment ship HMAS Supply (II) is set to take the place of HMAS Success, which is the longest serving RAN ship. The new vessel will enter service next year.

Success has a displacement of 18,000t and measures 157.2m in length.

Success and Newcastle were part of Indo-Pacific Endeavour 2019 (IPE 19) Joint Task Force that was deployed on a three-month regional engagement mission to South and South East Asia earlier this year.
