This spring, Raytheon Anschütz and Raytheon UK have opened a new integration and test facility at Portsdown Technology Park for Warship Integrated Navigation and Brigade System (WINBS) work.

Raytheon Anschütz’s spokesperson Clifford Beal tells Naval Technology that the new location is in the heart of the company’s UK customer community – and in a great position to support the Royal Navy fleet.

As part of its expansion, the company plans to launch a new apprenticeship programme and expand existing ties with area universities. “The cooperation with local universities helps us to attract talents and grow dedicated knowledge and expertise in supporting the Royal Navy over the years to come,” Beal says.

“[Portsdown Technology Park] has a modern and well-equipped space to develop and integrate the UK Royal Navy Type 31 WINBS. Workshops and offices are co-located with the other shore equipment for the Type 26 and Type 45 programmes,” Beal adds.

The new location also helps Raytheon maintaining the support of the ship classes as they come into service.

As an addition to Anschütz’s existing brigade system, the Synapsis Naval warship integrated navigation system, the new Naval Ecdis NX will be added. Ecdis NX is a Warship Electronic Chart Display and Information System (WECDIS) that combines safe navigation with tactical operation.

Beal explains: “It runs on a shared, off-the-shelf hardware platform to ensure flexibility in operation and logistics. On the basis of a widely proven standard application, which is compliant with the International Maritime Organization rules, various naval and military features are available and can be individually selected by means of software configuration.”

Beal adds that there is an accurate configuration control in place that maintains all safety approvals that comes with certain benefits. “Firstly, our applications are standardized and continuously kept in strict compliant with new IMO rules,” he continues.

“Secondly, customers always start with basic software and can adapt this as required using individually configurable features. Missions can be optimally served, while the budget can still be kept efficiently.”

Ecdis NX provides situational awareness by bringing together navigational and tactical information, with its features and charts individually configurable.

According to the NATO Standardization Agreement 4564 Ed. 3., the additional mission functions include navigational and tactical overlays, including sensors, effectors and military grid systems; navigation aids for special missions with target intercept, search and rescue; and anti-submarine warfare.

The nerve centre of surface combat capabilities, Synapsis Naval is built to accommodate standardised system components that are connected by local area network (LAN).

“The multifunctional workstations use commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware, a common software backbone for the central tasks and services and software modules to enable dedicated functions,” says Beal.

The company claims this design allows the operator to succeed in various missions, such as navigation and steering, alarms and tactical situation awareness. Beal says; however, that customer-specific needs need to be accommodated by adding specific sensors or systems, and system integration is also important.

Synapsis Naval’s capabilities include multifunctional workstations (tactical radar), International Maritime Organization navigation and surface search and short-medium range air surveillance radar systems surveillance radars. It has enhanced situational awareness and self-defence capabilities (command & control).

The system is sensor-agnostic to support specific customer-specific equipment and the open architecture design allows third-party integration. Synapsis features data management and distribution with support for specific cyber security solutions.
