Russia dispatches warship flotilla to Syria for manoeuvres

As fighting raged within Syria, its ally Russia dispatched a warship flotilla consisting of 11 warships to engage in scheduled manoeuvres at its naval base at the Syrian port of Tartous.

Tartous is Russia’s only remaining military base outside of the former Soviet Union, and the exercises were aimed at improving on Russia’s fleet readiness.

Included within the fleet was one of Russia’s Udaloy-Class anti-submarine warfare vessels.

Inmarsat warned over alleged dealings with Iran

UK-based mobile satellite company Inmarsat was warned by Israel’s Shurat HaDin Israel Law Centre regarding its support of Iranian oil tankers and naval vessels with satellite communication guidance services.

In a letter, the centre accused Inmarsat of guiding Iranian ships with continuous mobile satellite devices which could infringe upon a recent decision by the US Treasury Department to impose additional sanctions on maritime vessels.

Israel allege that these vessels have been found to be supporting Iran’s nuclear weapons programme.

Active RIMPAC 2012 phase commences off Hawaiian coast

The active phase of the 2012 Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise began, with participating ships departing the US Navy’s Pearl Harbour base to engage in training drills in the Pacific Ocean.

RIMPAC is the world’s largest naval exercise, with 45 naval ships, 100 aircraft and 20,000 servicemen from 22 nations taking part.

 

USS Truman begins sea trials

The US Navy’s eighth Nimitz-Class aircraft carrier, the USS Harry S Truman (CVN 75), began sea trials as part of a 16-month docking planned incremental availability.

The carrier will undergo testing to validate its system capabilities in surface operations, deck seamanship, flight-deck operations and damage control readiness.

 

India investigates cyber attack on Eastern Naval Command

The Indian Navy launched an investigation after its Eastern Naval Command was the target of a computer hacking attack, with plans regarding military operations thought to be at risk.

Other information retained by the Command includes information relating to strategic and commercial assets, as well as results from the trials of India’s first nuclear submarine, INS Arihant.

 

US Navy’s X-47B aircraft completes test flight at Pax River

The US Navy’s X-47B unmanned combat air system demonstrator completed its first test flight at Patuxent River, Maryland, US, flying over Chesapaeake Bay at speeds of up to 180 knots.

The aircraft is expected to undergo further testing to validate its performance during the coming months, with operations from an aircraft carrier scheduled for 2013 and autonomous aerial refuelling demonstrations pencilled in for 2014.
