Leonardo makes €3bn Qatar NH90 helicopter contract effective

The €3bn contract for the delivery of 28 units of the NH90 medium twin-engine multirole military helicopters to Qatar became effective.

The Ministry of Defence of Qatar made the first advanced payment for the deal.

Under the deal, Leonardo serves as the overall prime contractor to the consortium NHIndustries and will be responsible for the complete management of the entire NH90 delivery programme.


Indian DAC grants approval for purchase of services worth $6.58bn

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) of India granted approval for the acquisition of services for a total amount of approximately Rs460bn ($6.58bn).

DAC approved more than Rs210bn ($3bn) of the total acquisition to purchase 111 units of utility helicopters for the Indian Navy.

The acquisition is the first project under the Indian Ministry of Defence’s (MoD) strategic partnership model developed to boost the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ programme.

Boeing wins $805.3m contract for US Navy’s MQ-25A aerial refueller

The US Navy awarded an $805.3m engineering and manufacturing development contract to Boeing for the design and development of the newest MQ-25A Stingray aerial refueller.

Under the fixed-price-incentive-firm-target contract, the company will be responsible for the design, development, fabrication, test, supply and support of the new unmanned air vehicles.

As part of the deal, Boeing will provide the US Navy with four MQ-25A Stingray refuelling aircraft, and will also carry out the integration of the aircraft into the carrier air wing for an initial operational capability by 2024.


US Navy’s NAWCTSD division awards $980m TSC IV contract

The US Navy’s Naval Air Warfare Center Training System Division (NAWCTSD) awarded new Training Systems Contract IV (TSC IV), potentially worth $980m.

The TSC IV contract was awarded to 22 companies and involves the delivery of new training systems, in addition to upgrades to existing training systems, complementary instructional systems development, and complementary training systems support.

With a potential performance period of up to nine years, the multi-award indefinite-delivery indefinite-quantity contract will serve as the Naval Air Systems Command’s primary source of the systems.


British Royal Navy commissions second Tide-class tanker RFA Tiderace

The British Royal Navy commissioned the second Tide-class tanker Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA), Tiderace, into service during a dedication ceremony in Portland, UK.

The 39,000t tanker is expected to be deployed to sustain the country’s new aircraft carriers during their global missions and support operations for the next 30 years.

Tiderace completed her maiden helicopter trials in Plymouth prior to the dedication ceremony.


Alion wins $980m training systems support contract with US Navy

Alion Science and Technology received a $980m contract for the provision of training systems support services from the US Department of Navy, Naval Air Systems Command.

The training systems contract IV will see Alion offer non-commercial training systems, services and content in support of the NAWCTSD in Orlando, Florida.

The indefinite-delivery indefinite-quantity contract is slated to run for up to nine years.


US Navy awards contract for LPD 30 to HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding

The US Navy awarded a $165.5m advance procurement contract to Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division for the supply of a next-generation amphibious transport dock known as LPD 30.

LPD 30 is slated to be the first Flight II landing platform / dock.

It is expected to replace the retiring Whidbey Island (LSD 41) and Harpers Ferry (LSD 49) dock landing ships.


Royal Navy makes HMS Prince of Wales operations room ready for use

The UK Royal Navy’s new operations room for the service’s second Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carrier became ready for use two months earlier than planned.

The new centre for HMS Prince of Wales will enable the carrier’s crew members to keep a watch for emerging threats, in addition to tracking the movements of the vessel’s F-35B Lightning II fighter jets and Merlin helicopters.

Furthermore, operators will be able to direct varied missions, ranging from intercepting hostile aircraft to striking targets on land or delivering humanitarian aid in a disaster zone.


UK MoD relaunches tender for the Type 31e frigate

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) relaunched a tender for the development of the Type 31e frigate or General Purpose Frigate for the Royal Navy.

The MoD confirmed that it has issued a prior information notice for the construction of the new Type 31e fleet.

Over the coming weeks, the department intends to begin discussions with the country’s defence industry in order to ensure the efficient execution of the project.


Netherlands requests US $169m sale of MK 54 torpedo conversion kits

The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress of a possible foreign military sale of MK 54 lightweight torpedo conversion kits to the Netherlands.

The potential sale has an estimated value of $169m and will include the delivery of 106 MK 54 conversion kits, along with torpedo containers, recoverable exercise torpedoes with containers, fleet exercise sections and fuel tanks.

The Netherlands has also requested the acquisition of air launch accessories for rotary-wing aircraft as part of deal, as well as torpedo launcher interface cabinets, ground handling equipment, torpedo spare parts, and other related pieces of support and test equipment.
