Notably, the number of environmental sustainability-related patent applications in the aerospace, defence & security industry was 995 in Q4 2023, versus 3,872 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 31% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Safran filed the most environmental sustainability patents within the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q4 2023. The company filed 115 environmental sustainability-related patents in the quarter, compared with 142 in the previous quarter. It was followed by RTX with 79 environmental sustainability patent filings, General Electric (49 filings), and Kolon (35 filings) in Q4 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 30% share of total patent filings

The largest share of environmental sustainability related patent filings in the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q4 2023 was in the US with 30%, followed by China (20%) and Japan (8%). The share represented by the US was 16% higher than the 14% share it accounted for in Q3 2023.
