The top five companies accounted for 19% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Boeing filed the most artificial intelligence patents within the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q4 2023. The company filed 32 artificial intelligence-related patents in the quarter, compared with 21 in the previous quarter. It was followed by RTX with 15 artificial intelligence patent filings, Wing Aviation (9 filings), and Commissariat a l'Energie et aux Energies Alternatives (8 filings) in Q4 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 48% share of total patent filings

The largest share of artificial intelligence related patent filings in the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q4 2023 was in the US with 48%, followed by China (15%) and Japan (3%). The share represented by the US was 17% higher than the 30% share it accounted for in Q3 2023.
