Types of naval and maritime craft

Naval forces use a range of vessels and maritime craft for various missions and purposes. Some of them are listed below:

  • Aircraft carriers
  • Guided-missile carriers
  • Cruisers
  • Destroyers
  • Littoral combat ships
  • Frigates
  • Corvettes
  • Submarines
  • Amphibious assault ships
  • Fast patrol boats
  • Support ships

Warship design and construction

The warship design process can be broadly divided into two stages: the conceptual or preliminary design stage and the detailed or contract design stage.

The preliminary design is performed based on specified requirements, such as naval vessels with mine countermeasures, amphibious warfare vessels, or military patrol boats equipped with armour plating.

The design process involves focusing on ship interiors, ensuring they are fitted with weather-proof lighting and tailored naval outfitting solutions.

The construction of naval vessels and platforms is a complex process, involving the procurement, engineering, fabrication and construction of various components. Construction is undertaken in shipyards, following which vessels undergo dry docking, sea trials and, finally, launch.

Modernisation and repair of naval and maritime craft

Modernisation of naval vessels and maritime craft, including patrol boats, is undertaken to ensure operational effectiveness. As these vessels operate in some of the harshest environments, repair and maintenance activities focus on addressing structural integrity issues and mechanical breakdowns.  In the case of older vessels and platforms retrofitting of the latest equipment is undertaken.
