Singapore and Malaysian navies participate in Exercise Malapura 2017

The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) and the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) have participated in Exercise Malapura, held from 18 to 28 July, in Malaysia.

The exercise is a bilateral maritime activity that has been carried out since 1984.

The opening ceremony was officiated by RSN fleet commander rear-admiral Cheong Kwok Chien and RMN western fleet commander vice-admiral Dato' Mohamad Roslan bin Mohamad Ramli.

Hosted by the Malaysian Navy, Exercise Malapura 2017 involved approximately 600 personnel from both navies.

The group taking part in the exercise carried out joint planning and training at Lumut Naval Base in Malaysia, and also performed conventional naval warfare and maritime security drills in the Malacca Strait.

RSN assets that took part in this year’s exercise involved frigate RSS Formidable, missile corvette RSS Victory, patrol vessel RSS Resilience, and a Sikorsky S-70B Seahawk naval helicopter.

The Malaysian Navy joined Exercise Malapura with frigate KD Lekiu, corvette KD Kasturi, patrol vessel KD Selangor, and a Super Lynx helicopter.

"The good mutual understanding between our sailors was key to the successful conduct of this exercise."

RSN Task Group commander colonel Anthony Lee said: “The good mutual understanding between our sailors was key to the successful conduct of this exercise.

“Both navies demonstrated high levels of interoperability during shore planning and various warfare serials at sea. This is testament of the good friendships and trust that have been forged over the years.”

The two navies interact regularly across a wide range of activities, including professional exchanges and courses, and multilateral activities under the ambit of the Five Power Defence Arrangements and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Defence Ministers' Meeting (ADMM)/ADMM-Plus.

Both navies have also been working in close collaboration to improve maritime security through the Malacca Straits Patrol.
