German Navy's Sea King MK41 helicopter simulator re-enters service
The German Navy's Sea King MK41 helicopter simulator has re-entered service at the country’s Nordholz Naval Airbase following a major refit.
Sea King MK41 helicopter simulator upgrade has been conducted by CAE over the past year, and has been completed ahead of schedule.
Sea King training was conducted on a basic instrument flight rules (IFR) training device, which was originally developed by the company in the mid-1970s.
CAE conducted a wide range of major updates in order to upgrade the unit into a full-mission simulator, including the addition of the advanced CAE Medallion-6000 image generator with common database (CDB) architecture.
The refurbishment works also added upgraded avionics for concurrency with the current helicopter, as well as improved synthetic and tactical environment simulation software, a new vibration system, an enhanced instructor operator station and a new brief / debrief station.
The CDB architecture has been adopted by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) as an international standard for the creation of synthetic environment databases and will further improve the ability to perform networked, interoperable mission training across the German Armed Forces.
CAE Europe / Africa vice-president and general manager Marc-Olivier Sabourin said: “For almost 40 years the Sea King training device has provided valuable training, and now with the updates, the Sea King full-mission simulator will continue to deliver critical training that enhances the readiness of the German Navy's Sea King aircrews.
“With the operational requirements placed on the German Navy's Sea King helicopter fleet, they needed to increase the use of synthetic training and the upgraded simulator enables the German Navy to conduct more training in the full-mission simulator.”
The German Navy is now able to carry out several training tasks in the Sea King full-mission simulator that were previously impossible, including ship deck landings and night-vision goggle training.
CAE was awarded the Sea King MK41 helicopter simulator upgrade contract by Nato Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) in February 2016.
