Raytheon wins $1bn contract for US Navy’s next-generation jammer


Raytheon has been awarded a $1bn sole source contract by the US Navy for engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) for Increment 1 of the Next Generation Jammer (NGJ).

NGJ is advanced electronic attack technology, combining beam-jamming techniques with electronics.

Under the contract, Raytheon will supply 15 engineering development model pods to support the mission systems assessment and qualification, and 14 aeromechanical pods for airworthiness certification.

The contract also includes options for the company to design and deliver simulators and prime hardware to government labs and support for flight testing and government system integration.

Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems president Rick Yuse said: "NGJ is a smart pod that provides today's most advanced electronic attack technology, one that can easily be adapted to changing threat environments.

"That level of sophistication provides our warfighters with the technological advantage required to successfully prosecute their mission and return home safely."

The NGJ is based on an open architecture technology, leveraging on Raytheon's airborne radio frequency systems, jamming techniques, combat-proven antenna array technology, and sophisticated, solid-state electronics.

The jammer creates a protective shield which confuses enemies, creating 'ghost' aircraft and foiling sensors with focused radio energy.

It aims to meet the navy's electronic warfare mission requirements, and offer a cost-effective open systems architecture for future upgrades.

In addition, NGJ is designed to replace legacy ALQ-99 tactical jamming pods in order to offer new capabilities for the navy's EA-18G Growler.

The US Navy plans to declare initial operating capability for the jammer in 2021.

Last month, Raytheon secured a $270m contract to provide Standard Missile-6 (SM-6) production and associated spares to the US Navy.
