Northrop to develop SEWIP B3 electronic warfare system for US Navy


The US Navy has awarded an engineering, manufacturing and development (EMD) contract to Northrop Grumman for the AN/SLQ-32(V)7 (SEWIP B3) electronic warfare system.

Under this $91.7m contract, Northrop will finalise integration modelling and test plans, and also manufacture two prototype models for laboratory and field testing.

The latest development comes after the successful completion of the preliminary design review (PDR) for the electronic warfare system.

"The success of the PDR and award of the EMD contract reflect the strong partnership we have formed with the navy to deliver this urgently-needed capability."

Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems maritime systems vice-president Todd Leavitt said: "We have kept pace with a challenging schedule since the preliminary design award in February.

"The success of the PDR and award of the EMD contract reflect the strong partnership we have formed with the navy to deliver this urgently-needed capability to our nation's sailors."

According to Northrop, the SEWIP B3 will be integrated with other sensors and combat management systems in order to create the AN/SLQ-32(V)7 Electronic Warfare attack system.

The upgraded version of current AN/SLQ-32(V)6 systems will offer enhanced, fully integrated, threat detection and active radar-jamming capability, in addition to critical enhancements in coordinated electronic warfare defence.

The system will allow the US Navy warships to counter threats non-kinetically, the company stated.

Critical design review of the system is expected to take place next year, while initial fielding is scheduled for 2019.

Recently, Northrop received a $95m contract from the US Navy for low-rate initial production of the joint counter radio-controlled improvised explosive device (RCIED) electronic warfare (JCREW) Increment 1 Block 1 (I1B1).

JCREW systems are software-programmable jammers that are designed to deliver protection from device-triggered improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
