Australian Navy's MV Sycamore MATV completes sea trials

The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) has successfully completed the sea trials of its MV Sycamore multi-role aviation training vessel (MATV).

MV Sycamore was built by Dutch builder Damen Shipyards Group at its facility in Vietnam, and underwent an extensive testing programme of all its on-board military systems.

The sea trials included testing of traditional aspects such as manoeuvring and speed, in addition to an evaluation of vessel’s air traffic radar, flight deck lighting and firefighting, flight deck communication systems, and helicopter traverse installation procedures.

All of the new MATV's systems and processes were approved by representatives of the Commonwealth of Australia following the trials.

Damen Asia Pacific sales director Roland Briene said: “We are proud to hear that the MV Sycamore has passed her first tests with flying colours.

“Based on Damen’s successful and proven offshore patrol vessel (OPV) series, the MATV is a very versatile ship.”

"The 94m-long MV Sycamore will provide a training platform for all possible helicopter-related operations, such as in-flight helicopter refuelling operations and deck landings."

The 94m-long MV Sycamore will provide a training platform for all possible helicopter-related operations, such as in-flight helicopter refuelling operations and deck landings, as well as take-off and air traffic control. The MATV will also allow the RAN to accomplish a large number of other secondary tasks.

MV Sycamore will be able to carry out torpedo and mine recovery operations, dive support, Officer Sea Familiarisation, navigation training, target towing and consort duties, in addition to unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) support activities.

The vessel has a large storage capacity, allowing it to be mobilised in humanitarian relief operations.

MV Sycamore will be prepared for its maiden voyage to her homeport of Sydney, Australia, over the coming weeks, where it is expected to arrive at the end of May this year.
