Australian Navy to receive new Hobart-class Command Team Trainer


The Royal Australian Navy's (RAN) new Hobart-class Command Team Trainer has been formally accepted by the Commonwealth at HMAS Watson in Sydney, Australia.

The acceptance marks the first delivery of an entire shore-based support system for the RAN’s Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) programme.

It also represents the entry of the AWD programme into a new phase, which will see the delivery of additional advanced technologies and capabilities to the RAN.

The new capability underwent a development period of almost ten years, and will allow the RAN to train future crew members on the combat system before its operational deployment on the Hobart-class AWDs.

AWD Alliance general manager Paul Evans said: “We have transitioned from the theoretical architect and design phase to the actual application of this technology, further establishing industry’s role as a fundamental input into capability for defence.”

“The delivery of the Hobart-class Command Team Trainer is the first in a series of capabilities that we are providing to defence in the near-term including delivery of the first AWD, Hobart, to the Commonwealth later this year.”

Recreation of the AWD’s Command Information Centre involved the use of some of the same software and hardware that will operate on-board the destroyer. This will enable the RAN to train its personnel in true-to-life scenarios.

The system is also equipped with a simulation capability that enables instructors to dynamically change the scenario at will, via the insertion of enemy fighters or vessels relevant to the training situation.

The Command Team Trainer system can develop realistic visuals of the natural environment such as sea state and all weather conditions, thereby enabling future AWD command teams to train more effectively for sea-based combat operations.
