The US Navy has christened amphibious transport dock ship San Diego (LPD 22) at Northrop Grumman’s shipbuilding facility in Pascagoula, Mississippi.

LPD 22 will support the marine corps mobility triad, which consists of the landing craft air cushion vehicle, the expeditionary fighting vehicle and the Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft.

Combat capabilities incorporated onboard the ship include an advanced command-and-control suite, increased in-vehicle lift-capability, cargo-carrying capacity and advanced ship-survivability features.

The 684ft-long, 105ft-wide San Diego has a displacement capacity of 24,900t and can accommodate a landing force of up to 800 marines while cruising at a top speed of 22kt.
