First Fleet Tanker Launched for Indian Navy

INS Deepak, the first of two fleet tankers for the Indian Navy being built at Italy's Fincantieri Shipyard, has been launched at Muggiano, Italy.

Indian Navy spokesperson Commander PVS Satish said the construction of the ship used modern and state-of-the-art ship construction methods and concepts, according to the Indo-Asian News Service.

"The ship is in double-hull configuration, which provides greater safety against accidental oil spillage in accordance with the latest MARPOL regulations," he said.

INS Deepak will undergo sea trials from April, while the delivery and commissioning is scheduled for 2011.

The second refuelling tanker, being built at the Fincantieri Shipyard of Sestri Ponente in Genoa, northern Italy, is also scheduled for delivery in 2011.
