The US Navy has awarded a $2.4bn contract to Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding for the refuelling and complex overhaul (RCOH) of the Nimitz Class aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71).
As part of the RCOH the supercarrier will be restructured for the second-half of its nominal 50-year service life.
The inspection and repair process includes refuelling the reactors, repairing and upgrading ship infrastructure and systems, and modernising the ship and its combat and communication systems.
The modernisation process of the aircraft carrier is scheduled to be complete by February 2013.
