The UK Royal Navy Type 42 destroyer, HMS Gloucester, has been decommissioned in Portsmouth, UK.

The destroyer, launched in 1982, has put in over 25 years of service and is known for the first successful engagement of a missile by another missile in combat at sea, according to BBC News.

The 141m-long HMS Gloucester had a displacement capacity of 5,200t and a cruising speed of 30kt.

The Type 42 destroyers are gradually being replaced by the new Type 45 destroyers as per the UK Government’s Strategic Defence and Security Review 2010.
