L-3 Communications Platform Integration division has been awarded a contract to perform aircraft sustainment, modification and installation (SMIP) for the US Navy fleet of P-3, EP-3 and NP-3 aircraft.

The $104m indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity (ID/IQ) contract follows a previous programme awarded to L-3 in 2005.

The SMIP programme intends to provide an intensive depot-level process, component inspection and deficiency identification for the P-3 airframe.

L-3’s SMIP activities include refurbishment and installation of the P-3 outer wing, special structural inspection kits (SSI-Ks), phased maintenance inspections (PMIs) and modification / installation programmes (MIPs).
