The Russian Navy Northern Fleet destroyer, Severomorsk, will participate in the patrolling of pirate-infested waters in the Gulf of Aden, the Russian Defence Ministry has said.
“A task force led by Northern Fleet’s Severomorsk destroyer will start escorting commercial ships in the Gulf of Aden and off the Horn of Africa in the first half of June,” the ministry added.
Severomorsk, an Udaloy Class destroyer, will be joined by the Yelnya tanker from the Baltic Fleet and a tug boat from the Black Sea Fleet to ensure maritime traffic safety.
The Russian Navy has been maintaining its presence with warships operating on a rotation basis off the Somali coast since October 2008, according to RIA Novosti.
