Iran has plans to manufacture and deploy new indigenous submarines to patrol the country’s southern coasts, Iranian Naval forces deputy commander admiral Amir Farhadi has said.
The 500t medium-sized submarine, designed primarily to patrol the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz, will join the naval fleet by July 2012.
The navy deployed four additional 120t Ghadir submarines on the country’s southern coast last year.
Currently, Iran operates more than ten Ghadir submarines in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman, according to Press TV.
