Lockheed has been awarded a contract by the US Navy to design and deliver a second-generation MK39 Expendable Mobile anti-submarine training target (EMATT).
EMATTs, used by air and surface crews for unrestricted, open-ocean and on-range anti-submarine warfare training, are designed to simulate the movements and sounds of diesel submarines.
Lockheed’s underwater vehicles senior program manager, Mike Gifford, said the upgraded EMATT variant will provide the US Navy with programmable acoustics, improved representation of enemy submarines and acoustic command links.
Work under the $5.4m contract will be performed at the company’s facility in Marion, Massachusetts, US.
