South Korea has launched a major live-fire drill near the tense Yellow Sea border in a bid to show its strength against North Korea.

The defence ministry said tanks, armoured personnel carriers, artillery pieces, helicopters and jets have participated in the drill at the Pocheon range, South Korea.

The country is also holding a week-long sea exercise to mark the first anniversary of its Cheonan warship sinking on 26 March last year, according to Agence France Presse.

The sea exercise will include training South Korean warships and aircraft with simulated attacks by North Korean submarines, ships and jet fighters along with naval firing training.
