Acoustic Gunfire Location

18 October 2011 by Ultra Electronics

Ultra Electronics Sonar Systems has developed an acoustic Gunfire Locator (GL) based on phase coherent signal processing and other advanced processing techniques. The result is a small, lightweight, cost effective sensor with high performance and very low susceptibility to false alarms.

Initially developed as the Rifle Mounted Gunfire Locator (RMGL), shown in Figure 1.1, the design is a self-contained passive acoustic system that detects hostile high velocity weapons fire from the characteristic shock wave and muzzle blast "crack and thump". RMGL is a rugged, compact unit that weighs under 500g (1lbs) and displays range, bearing and elevation data in a simple format that is compatible with night vision equipment. It provides a significant improvement in situational awareness for dismounted troops with minimum operational burden to individuals.
