China, like many communist countries, has long prided itself on its military strength and with this latest unprecedented expansion hopes to become a major player on the world stage.

The variation in estimates of China's military spending has left many of its neighbours nervous about the reasons for expansion.

Military build-up is seen by Chinese leaders as the country's right and the only way it can be taken seriously.
