Saab - 3-D Navy Radar

Saab is a leading provider of sensor systems, encompassing advanced navy, airborne and ground-based radars.

Saab's power and technology help you achieve constant information superiority. If you are first to know, you can be first to act: our robust, interoperable, cost-efficient and future-proof navy, air and ground radar sensor systems provide such capability.

SURVEILLANCE 3-D NAVY RADAR

The Sea Giraffe AMB, the state-of-the-art market multi-role surveillance navy radar, belongs to the latest generation of Giraffe radar systems. Sea Giraffe AMB benefits from Saab Microwave Systems' long and productive experience in supplying more than 500 Giraffe radars to more than 30 countries worldwide.

The Sea Giraffe AMB is a powerful, cost-effective, lightweight, enclosed, fully coherent multi-role 3-D navy radar, providing a full range of non-conflicting functions for simultaneous:

  • Air surveillance and tracking, including Tracking-On-Jam (TOJ)
  • Surface (horizon) surveillance and tracking
  • Target classification, including classification of both hovering and moving helicopters
  • Navigation capabilities
  • Weapon location and tracking of Rocket, Artillery and Mortar (RAM) targets
  • Target indication to weapon systems for precision anti-air and anti-surface engagement
  • Gunfire support, including splash spotting

The Sea Giraffe AMB's optional radome shields the above-deck components of the Sea Giraffe AMB from weather and provides a protected environment for maintenance. The radome also reduces the Radar Cross-Section (RCS) of the Sea Giraffe AMB's above-deck parts.

The Sea Giraffe AMB 3-D navy radar combines the advantages of stacked-beam and pencil-beam antenna concepts. Transmission and reception beams can be controlled in elevation from radar pulse to radar pulse.

SEA GIRAFFE NAVY RADAR ADVANTAGES

The Sea Giraffe AMB navy radar provides superior capabilities compared with many other 3-D radars. A large volume in space can be covered in every antenna revolution, while selectable search patterns in elevation are designed to satisfy different requirements on elevation coverage from 0° up to more than 70°.

The antenna can rotate at either 30rpm or 60rpm, thus providing superior rapid reaction time. The time from first detection to establishment of a confirmed track is just a few seconds, providing immediate, extremely accurate track data to the combat management system.

PARALLEL-RECEIVING RADAR BEAMS

Measurement of targets is performed in multiple parallel-receiving radar beams with use of amplitude monopulse, which provides a capability to measure the elevation coordinate extremely accurately.

The technique for elevation coverage also accurately compensates electronically for a ship's roll and pitch. Consequently, the Sea Giraffe AMB does not require a mechanically stabilised platform. Efficient clutter suppression is achieved at all elevations.

NAVIGATION-ESCORT CAPABILITY

A built-in navigation-escort capability, with similar performance to an ordinary navigation radar, can be used either with full output power or with reduced output power to enhance the Low Probability of Intercept (LPI).

SURFACE-TARGET RADAR TRACKING

An optimised processing channel for surface search, including high-resolution splash spotting for fall-off-shot observations, both permits extremely accurate tracking of surface targets selected for gunfire engagement, and enables the observation of splashes very close to the selected surface target.

Rockets, mortars and even ammunition from guns are detected 360° around the ship, and both the firing and predicted-impact position are calculated. This allows the ship to perform evasive manoeuvres, counteract by using the gun for naval gunfire support or transfer the firing position of such a threat to other units.

FUNCTIONALLY INTEGRATED IFF

Another available enhancement is a functionally integrated IFF supporting IFF Mod 1, 2, 3/A and 4, as well as Mod S and Mod 5.

ECCM CAPABILITIES

ECCM capabilities include ultra-low side lobe levels, code agility in the transmission patterns, PRF change and PRF stagger, least jammed frequency and LPI waveforms.

LINE REPLACEABLE UNITS

The philosophy for onboard maintenance is based on changing Line Replaceable Units (LRUs) rather than performing repairs onboard. An efficient on-line and off-line built-in test supports the operator in fault-finding and isolation of faulty LRUs.

LONG MEAN TIME BETWEEN FAILURES

The Sea Giraffe AMB's system availability is unmatched amongst current 3-D naval radars: the Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) is long. Comprehensive redundancy is built-in.

The Sea Giraffe AMB greatly reduces investment requirements for onboard and depot spares. Moreover, its superior system availability, combined with its minimal operator training and maintenance requirements, minimises total ownership cost.
