Kongsberg Maritime - Navy Sonars and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles

Kongsberg Maritime is recognised worldwide for supplying marine electronics for the offshore, ocean survey and naval markets. Our main areas of activity are vessel control, hydroacoustics, process automation and ocean survey.

Our hydroacoustics products include navy sonars for anti-submarine warfare; mine hunting and active sonars for submarines; the HUGIN Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV); echo sounders; data-processing software; and survey-data management solutions.

NAVY SONARS

Kongsberg Maritime has developed and produced navy sonars for anti-submarine warfare and mine hunting for more than 20 years. A new generation of mine hunting, mine avoidance and ASW navy sonars are under development.

New transducer technology, including integrated wideband front-end electronics, is used for reception at all frequencies. The transducers are based on wideband composite technology.

COTS NAVY SONARS

All navy sonars use the new Windows®-based display technology as part of an operator unit designed for various sonars, all based on COTS technology. Our navy sonars have an international track record, and are well known for excellent performance and reliable technology.

LITTORAL WARFARE SCENARIO NAVY SONARS

Our navy sonars are specially designed for littoral warfare scenarios and are operated by a number of naval customers.

UNDERWATER POSITIONING SYSTEMS

Kongsberg Maritime offers a range of underwater positioning systems and is the major supplier in the civilian world market. The High-Precision Acoustic Positioning system (HiPAP) has become the industry standard due to its excellent performance in any water depth.

HIGH-PRECISION ACOUSTIC POSITIONING SYSTEM

Several hundred HiPAP systems are in frequent use in depths from 10m to 4,000m, with special strengths in shallow water applications. The world's navies are now also seeing the opportunities of this new reliable and accurate technology, and installations have already been made on USNS Zeus and the Swedish stealth Visby class.

HUGIN AUTONOMOUS UNDERWATER VEHICLE

The HUGIN AUV concept has recently achieved a breakthrough, and proved to be an excellent and efficient sensor platform for collecting detailed and high-resolution seabed information. For years, the HUGIN AUV has been mapping seabed information in new offshore exploration sites at water depths of several thousands of metres.

HUGIN 1000 AUTONOMOUS UNDERWATER VEHICLE

The latest member within our AUV family is the HUGIN 1000. The HUGIN 1000 AUV is a key element in the HUGIN Mine Reconnaissance Program (MRP). The first AUV of this standard is now installed and in operational evaluation in the Royal Norwegian Navy.

The main operations of the HUGIN 1000 AUV are:

  • High-quality bathymetric mapping
  • Mine Counter Measure (MCM) route survey
  • Mine reconnaissance
  • Mine detection, classification and positioning
  • Overt and covert RAPID Environmental Assessment (REA)

HUGIN 1000 MRP SYSTEM

The HUGIN 1000 MRP system has shown remarkable results and is the most exercised system of this kind in the world. The system can be installed as a stand-alone or container-based system, or integrated into a C2 system.

HYDROGRAPHIC PRODUCTS

Kongsberg Maritime's hydrographic products include:

  • Single-beam precision echo-sounders
  • Multi-beam echo sounders
  • Hydrographic-data processing software
  • Integrated real-time solutions for survey-data management

MULTI-BEAM ECHO SOUNDERS

Our multi-beam echo sounders are precision instruments for efficient mapping of larger seabed areas. The total system accuracy is the best available from any vendor and the sounder systems are well suited for producing navigational-map data to the most stringent requirements set by IHO.

Our range of multi-beam echo sounders covers all applications from short-range high-resolution surveys to full ocean-depth seabed mapping. In addition to the bathymetric soundings, these multi-beam echo sounders produce a calibrated high-resolution acoustic image of the seabed, which is useful for revealing geological processes, characterising the seabed material and locating objects on the seafloor.

SUBMARINE MULTI-BEAM ECHO SOUNDERS

Concerning naval applications, today multi-beam echo sounders are an important sensor in the AUV MCM concept HUGIN 1000, and in conventional submarines. These submarine multi-beam echo sounders will increase the quality of terrain navigation operating in the coastal environment.

Our hydrographic products are sold to all the major hydrography offices in the world.
