L-3 Communications MAPPS (L-3 MAPPS), a subsidiary of L-3 Communications, announced today that Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Company has awarded a contract to L-3 MAPPS to supply an Integrated Machinery Control System (IMCS) for the second ship of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Navy’s prestigious King Sejong the Great class guided missile destroyers, also known as the KDX-III program. This award marks the thirteenth vessel of the ROK Navy to be outfitted with an L-3 MAPPS control system.

The system is based on L-3 MAPPS’ pioneering integrated platform management system which uses advanced computer-based technology to control and monitor platform machinery and systems on board warships. It comprises remote terminal units for data acquisition and real-time data processing for information display and control operations from multifunction consoles.

The IMCS implementation for the KDX-III ships, which are fitted with the Aegis weapon system, will involve extensive localization facilitating superior local technical support for the ROK Navy. It includes advanced and highly redundant control system applications to increase ship survivability under damage conditions and takes advantage of L-3 MAPPS’ experience in deploying mission critical systems for naval vessels..

The platform management system for the first ship in the series was delivered to Hyundai Shipyard in December 2006. The system for the current order will be delivered to Daewoo Shipyard in early 2008.

‘L-3 MAPPS is pleased to implement another modern platform management system for the ROK Navy,’ said Rangesh Kasturi, Vice President, Marketing & Sales, L-3 MAPPS Marine Systems and Simulation. ‘Since 1994, L-3 MAPPS has been selected to supply thirteen control systems for ROK Navy ships, making the ROK Navy one of L-3 MAPPS’ most significant users of our innovative technology.’
