The type 487 TPD-SAE is a compact new Voith Turbo fluid coupling with a power range up to 440kW at 2100rpm. The fill-controlled coupling has been developed for plant and mobile machine manufacturers with diesel engine applications such as shredders, crushers, dredges, piston and centrifugal pump drives. They are fitted by direct mounting on standardised SAE engine flywheel and housing connections.
The key feature of the new fluid coupling is its application-specific dimensioning. One of the primary design objectives of this unit was to make it as compact as possible resulting in easier retrofit opportunities to replace problematic clutch systems. Additional design targets included simple coupling operation and maintenance, low service-costs and long service-life.
The development of the 487 TPD-SAE type coupling was based on a market analysis and Voith's extensive knowledge in fluid coupling design and production. It is operated with a closed oil circuit and enables the driven machine to be connected and disconnected while the engine is running by filling and draining the hydrodynamic coupling, at any engine speed. As a result of this operational function, the Voith Turbo fluid coupling can perform the function of a mechanical clutch coupling, which is frequently subject to considerable wear and requires intensive maintenance, with almost zero wear.
Power can be transmitted to the driven machine by (1) V-belt pulley, (2) a flexible element connecting coupling, or (3) by a U-joint shaft. As the fill-controlled coupling is always started when empty, the diesel engine starts up without load. As a result of the hydrodynamic power transmission, the entire drive-system is continuously protected thanks to damping of torsional vibration and load impacts.
Voith Turbo recently commenced production of prototypes for various customers and demand is expected to grow quickly. The Voith 487 TPD-SAE fluid coupling is designed to be marketed worldwide for mobile industrial applications.
