Voith Turbo

Voith Turbo - Start-up Components

Wherever machines are started and moved, wherever power needs to be transmitted under extreme conditions, wherever maximum reliability is required – that's where we are at home. The Voith Group are the experts who have the solution for your problems in the field of industrial power transmission – backed by the experience of over half a century.

VOITH TURBO FLUID COUPLINGS

Voith constant-fill fluid couplings (turbo couplings) and fill-controlled fluid couplings (turbo couplings) have evolved from an innovation of the engineering genius Professor Hermann Foettinger (1877 – 1945). The principle of hydrodynamic power transmission is based on the interaction between a pump and a turbine. In a fluid coupling, this principle is realised by means of two bladed wheels. Together with a surrounding shell, these create a working chamber, in which fluid circulates. The actual transmission of power occurs without any wear, the transmitting components do not touch each other. The only parts subject to natural wear are components such as bearings and seals.

BENEFITS OF FLUID COUPLINGS IN MARINE PROPULSION SYSTEMS

  • Reduction of operating costs
  • Higher power transmission
  • Higher availability
  • Improved usability
  • Reduction of investment costs

Due to the following features of the fluid couplings:

  • Vibration damping
  • Shock absorption
  • Automatic load sharing (multi-engine drive)
  • Clutching (fill controlled fluid couplings)

THE SHIPBUILDING INDUSTRY - OUR PARTNER!

Our partnership with the shipbuilding industry is nearly as old as the fluid coupling itself. For over 50 years, Voith Turbo has been supplying couplings for a wide range of marine applications, especially frigates, patrol vessels and tugs. The experience and the know-how gained by both partners has been and will always be the basis for further improvements of our couplings - we adapt our products continuously to the requirements of our customers. An example is the TPZS turbo coupling with high power density, especially developed for installation in marine drives.

DRIVE SOLUTIONS!

Our products are successfully used by 12 different navies in Europe, Asia, America and Africa.

Voith Turbo fluid couplings can be found in the following marine applications:

Multi-engine drives (CODAD, CODOG and CODAG) in:

  • Frigates
  • Destroyers
  • Patrol vessels
  • Corvettes
  • Helicarriers

Single engine drives in:

  • Voith water tractors
  • Mine hunters
  • Tugs
  • Workboats
