Converteam, the power conversion specialist, has been awarded an approximately £3.4 million contract for key electrical equipment for the propulsion, automation and positioning of a new range support vessel for the South Korean ADD (Agency for Defence Development).

Korean shipyard STX Offshore & Shipbuilding Co. Ltd has awarded the contract on behalf of Korean ADD. The ship will be built by STX at their shipyard in the city of Jinhae and is due for completion during 2012.

This vessel will be involved in supporting the navy’s testing exercises as well as a multiplicity of other roles. Converteam’s scope includes electrical propulsion equipment including propulsion motors, power converters and switchgear. Converteam’s C-Series of control and automation systems will provide a comprehensive ship automation and monitoring system as well as a sophisti-cated dynamic position (DP) control system which controls the main propulsion and manoeu-vring thrusters to precisely position the vessel.

Converteam is the leading supplier of electric propulsion solutions to the US Navy, the Royal Navy and the French Navy. These references and the lifecycle approach were key to securing this important order.
