DD(X) Propulsion Motor Achieves Full Power

08 November 2005 10:27

ALSTOM Power Conversion Incorporated (APCI) reports that the DD(X) Integrated Power System (IPS) Test Team has achieved full torque of over 1,000,000 foot pounds on the Advanced Induction Motor (AIM) at the NGSS, NSWC Land Based Test Site in Philadelphia. This AIM is rated at 18.25MW at 127 RPM.

Under contract with Northrop Grumman Ship Systems, ALSTOM's propulsion solution includes the power dense motor controller called a VDM25000 and the Advanced Induction Motor. Both of these components have achieved full power during the testing. This propulsion system is the most power dense package demonstrated at full scale to designed torque and is now ready as the main propulsion solution for DD(X).

"The IPS is a vital element of the DD(X) design." affirmed Brian Cuccias, Northrop Grumman Vice President and DD(X) Program Manager. "Successfully completing these tests verifies key performance parameters set by the US Navy and further demonstrates the added capabilities this ship will bring to the joint maritime force. We have a power solution for real naval transformation."

ALSTOM Power Conversion Inc., and its Pittsburgh based design, test and commissioning team are continuing to expedite additional testing at the Land Based Test Site.

Shoun Kerbaugh, President and CEO of ALSTOM Power Conversion Inc., stated, "This final step in the Integrated Power System Engineering Development Model demonstrates the maturity expected in the propulsion solution for the DD(X) destroyer."

ALSTOM Power Conversion Inc. is an established system designer and equipment supplier for the US Navy with current projects on T-AKE (NASSCO) and LHD-8 (NGSS).
