Portsmouth Aviation - NBC Protection Filters and Systems

Portsmouth Aviation Limited is a significant defence equipment company specialising in Nuclear Biological Chemical (NBC) air filtration units and systems. We have supplied NBC collective protection systems to naval combat vessels in the United Kingdom, Chile, Brazil, India, Canada and Denmark.

We also supply NBC systems for buildings and mail handling protective systems. The company principally supports the NBC radial filter unit and the No. 6 and No. 7 air filtration unit.

Portsmouth Aviation has 75 years' experience in a wide range of services to a variety of customers. We have strong links with the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence, providing project management, design, development and manufacturing services for equipment used on Land, Sea and Air.

NBC RADIAL AIR FILTRATION UNIT

The NBC radial filter unit has been designed to integrate with the minimum of structural change into new build or existing vessel structure. The element conforms to STANAG 4447 ensuring common support across NATO navies.

The NBC radial filter consists of a HEPA filter, for the removal of bacteria and other pathogens, and a gas filter which removes chemical and radiac warfare agents in the form of gases or vapours by adsorption to the activated charcoal filling.

The NBC radial filter system is fitted to the Royal Navy’s Type 45 Destroyer, LPDs Albion and Bulwark, AO Wave Knight/Ruler and Multi-role Survey Vessels. It is also planned to be retrofitted to the Type 23 Frigate.

This NBC filter system can be supplied either fully automated or with varying degrees of automation. It can be remotely started from a central control system ensuring that it is fully operational in a very short period of time.

NO. 6 AND NO. 7 AIR FILTRATION UNITS

The No. 6 and No. 7 air filtration units are completely self-contained and provide an easily installed NBC capability by connecting to existing air ventilation systems and electrical supplies. These units are fitted into the majority of the Royal Navy’s minor war vessels and the Type 42 Destroyer. The No. 7 unit is constructed of low magnetic materials and is fitted to mine countermeasure vessels.

The air filtration unit consists of a pre filter, removing coarse particulate matter, including larger particles of nuclear fallout. The second stage is a HEPA filter, which removes fine particulate matter, including bacteria and finally a gas filter that removes chemical and radiac warfare agents.
