Bruker Daltonics Introduces BioThreat Profiler, a Research Tool for Biomarker-based Identification of Biological Warfare Agents

Gothenburg, Sweden -- June 2, 2004 - Bruker Daltonics Inc., an operating company of Bruker BioSciences Corporation (NASDAQ: BRKR), today announces the BioThreat Profiler™, a novel approach for lab-based research on biomarkers for the identification of biological warfare agents (BWAs) using MALDI-TOF (Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time of Flight) mass spectrometry. The rapidly increasing demands on homeland security have led to the urgent need for additional bio-security research, and for fast and reliable confirmatory identification of known biological agents, as well as novel strains and mutants in a laboratory setting.
Based on Bruker Daltonics’ experience in the life-science research market and in clinical biomarker discovery systems, the outstanding performance of our MALDI-TOF(/TOF) mass spectrometers with specialized software meet the requirements of a research system for biomarker discovery for fast and reliable identification of suspect biological species, and for potential differentiation of related strains and mutants. The BioThreat Profiler is being introduced today at the 8th International Symposium on Protection against Chemical and Biological Warfare Agents in Gothenburg.
The BioThreat Profiler system is applicable to bacteria, spores, fungi and toxins, i.e. also to biological threats that do not contain any DNA or RNA. Bruker Daltonics’ use of a novel biomarker database for the identification of micro-organism and other BWAs leads to a powerful approach for bio-security research, and for lab-based species and strain-specific identification and confirmatory analysis.
