New Naval Light Gun - Mauser to supply 83 MLG 27 systems to the German Navy

21 October 2002 10:44

Mauser-Werke Oberndorf Waffensysteme GmbH of Oberndorf/Neckar, Germany has been awarded a contract for one of the German Navy's most important modernisation projects. A total of 83 MLG 27 light naval gun systems will provide the German Navy's ships and crews with optimum protection during a variety of operations. The first of the new guns will be delivered at the end of 2003. The contract is set to run for nine years.

The pioneering MLG 27 is set to become the German Navy's standard medium-calibre gun, replacing 20mm and 40mm systems on existing ships and as armament for new units like the K130 corvette. Remotely operated and autonomous, the MLG 27 features an integrated fire control unit. Whether as primary or secondary armament, this innovative gun - which fires newly developed FAPDS ammunition - is ideally suited for deployment on surface combatants and support vessels operating close to coasts and ports. Worldwide, there is no comparable product.

The new MLG 27 enables the application of high-precision fire day and night against lightly armed, highly agile targets in low-intensity, non-symmetrical threat scenarios. This means it is suitable for use in peacekeeping and anti-terrorist operations alike. Attacks like the one carried out against the USS Cole in October 2000, with devastating implications for personnel and materiel, can now be prevented thanks to the MLG 27.

Mauser-Werke Oberndorf Waffensysteme GmbH is a subsidiary of Rheinmetall DeTec AG of Ratingen, Germany, the defence technology arm of the Rheinmetall group.

With the Germany Navy as a reference, Mauser-Werke is optimistic about the prospects for marketing the MLG 27 worldwide. This is entirely in line with Rheinmetall DeTec's systematic strategy of expanding the share of its defence technology products sold abroad from roughly 45% of total sales at present to some 60% in the medium term.
