Rheinmetall Widens its Strategic Horizons: New Homeland Security Unit – Comprehensive Solutions for Civil Defence

13 May 2005 09:35

Responding to changing threats to national security, Rheinmetall DeTec AG's new Homeland Security unit offers system solutions for internal security and civil defence missions.

Already today, Rheinmetall offers a broad array of products suitable for operations of this type. Based on the company's longstanding competence in the domain of defence technology, new solutions are being developed to support relevant organizations and agencies in the field of internal security.

For example, a smokescreen system capable of concealing the exact location from visual detection in the event of an attack by a hijacked aircraft.

The current threat situation is making it increasingly hard to differentiate between external and internal risks to our security, making it all the more important to adopt comprehensive measures to defend the civilian population in our own country and elsewhere. Apart from the military, organizations requiring new equipment for new missions include civil defence elements, the police, fire departments and other emergency response units.

A globally respected defence technology concern, Rheinmetall DeTec can draw on broad-based expertise as well as decades of experience in cooperating with other companies around the world. By applying existing solutions as well as developing new ones, the company is set to make a major contribution to supporting the efforts of relevant agencies, organizations and emergency services.

In the interests of maximizing efficiency, the new unit will draw on existing capacities, simultaneously creating an efficient, customer-oriented sales organization. Hugo Wolf, formerly managing director of Rheinmetall Waffe Munition GmbH, heads the unit.

Surveillance, reconnaissance and target localisation systems: UAV systems enable precise and rapid reconnaissance at day and night, electronic countermeasures and effective results, including over large distances.

An important reference project is the recent framework agreement with the German nuclear power industry, which provides for the installation of protective concealment systems to shield power plants from terrorist attack from the air. The first system will soon be entering operation. The company also sees strong potential for marketing the system abroad, which can also be used for protecting factories, government buildings and other critical infrastructure assets.

A whole host of previously introduced products and technologies form a solid foundation for Rheinmetall's activities in the field of Homeland Security. In the civil defence domain, the company's NBC defence systems – in service with major fire departments all over Germany – have earned it an excellent reputation, while the country's law enforcement agencies have long relied on special effects ammunition from Rheinmetall. Moreover, the company's reconnaissance and monitoring system – both optical and radar – are now being used to protect major events.

Products range from manipulator vehicles for the disposal of explosive devices to 7-ton heavy manipulator vehicles for the elimination of damage after nuclear incidents.

With customers in over 40 countries, Rheinmetall is also a world leader in the field of robotics. For example, Rheinmetall remote-handling technology is on hand at airports throughout Germany in the form of highly reliable EOD robots.
