EUROTORP Awarded €50 Million Contract for Lightweight Torpedo Launching Systems

20 December 2006

EUROTORP, the French / Italian Consortium formed by WASS (a FINMECCANICA company), DCN International and THALES, has been awarded a contract by ARMARIS worth about €50 million for the provision of 17 lightweight torpedo launching systems, to be located onboard the new Franco-Italian multi-mission FREMM frigates.

The lightweight torpedo launching systems grant the control / firing of the NATO-standard MU 90 ALWT, and will be fully integrated with the ships' combat management system. The systems will support at least two degraded mode levels, and will embed virtual emulations to support onboard ASW training-while-sailing requirements.

The MU90 ALWT, recognised as the best-performing lightweight torpedo ever, has been chosen by the French, Italian and a number of NATO and Allied navies. Up to now, more than 1000 MU90 rounds have been manufactured.
