L-3 Communications - Power Conversion and Distribution Systems for Military Vessels

The most advanced and versatile power solutions for military vessels come from L-3 Communications / Power Systems Group - a company with more than 50 years of experience in the design, manufacture and integration of ruggedized power-system components for defense, government and industrial applications. L-3 / Power Systems Group has set the standard for highly reliable, cost-effective and easy-to-maintain equipment for harsh operating environments.

SABT STATIC AUTOMATIC BUS TRANSFER SWITCH

The line of Static Automatic Bus Transfer (SABT) switches uses silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) power-switching elements to automatically transfer critical loads from a primary power source to an alternate power source in the event of interruption or abnormal conditions. It transfers power in four milliseconds (1/4000th of a second), infinitely faster than electromechanical switches.

SABT switches can be custom-programmed for use in any shipboard application, from instantaneous power transfer to slower transfer times. Dedicated logic for the critical interpretation and switching operations ensures fast and predictable operation, while a microprocessor performs the system-level functions.

These SABT switches are the only solid-state, programmable units to have been QPL-certified, and are compatible with MIL-STD-1399 and STANAG 1008 standards. They also are MIL-S-901 grade A shock and MIL-STD-167-I vibration qualified. L-3 / Power Systems Group offers bulkhead or deck-mounted units in 60A to 400A ranges.

PNCC / PNSC INTEGRATED POWER NODE DELIVERY SYSTEM

The Integrated Power Node Delivery System (IPND) offers the latest in electrical distribution system reliability, survivability, power density and load power quality. The IPND system changes the way to design, operate and maintain the ship electrical power system and is the smart way to obtain load survivability, system reliability, and power quality tailored for each load.

The IPND delivers high quality power to the ship's loads using a minimal set of sub modules, greatly simplifying everything from the initial ordering of equipment through operational service maintenance.

SSI SOLID STATE INTERRUPTER

The Solid State Interrupter (SSI) is a unique and innovative electronic circuit breaker that can be programmed to adjust the trip current, thereby providing the flexibility of utilizing a common configuration in various applications.

Installed between the power source and critical loads, the SSI trips on faults due to overcurrent, undervoltage, overtemperature, open SCR and open fuse. In addition, the SSI is adjustable for various time / current overload characteristics and provides remote operation.

The SSI is designed for 900A continuous conduction in a 50°C environment, 450VAC ±20%, 3-phase, 60Hz and 120VAC to 400VAC at 20Hz to 50Hz applications. The unit is self-cooled by an internal fan and qualified to meet military environmental requirements.

ACFC AIR-COOLED FREQUENCY CONVERTERS

The new family of Air-Cooled Frequency Converters (ACFC) represents the next leap forward in refined, stable and reliable power delivery to central and distributed 400Hz systems such as weapons, fire control, ECM, sonar and avionics.

ACFCs feature modular construction and incorporate state-of-the-art IGBT technology. Built-in microprocessor-controlled diagnostics can instantly identify failures to the Lowest Replaceable Unit (LRU) level at the subassembly level. Redundant supply and exhaust cooling fans further increase reliability. Moreover, self-synchronization technology allows up to six ACFC units to be operated in parallel.

ACFCs comply with MIL-STD-1399 requirements for Type III power and STANAG 1008, Edition 8, and are compatible with existing shipboard data busses. The ACFC family includes units with ratings of 75kW, 100kW, 125kW, 150kW and 175kW.

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY DISTRIBUTION TRANSFORMERS

We are the leading supplier of QPL transformers to the US Navy. Every US Navy ship launched since WWII has included our magnetic components somewhere on board.

  • Modular multi-phase PWM motor drive input transformers
  • Convection forced-air and liquid-cooled units
  • Large Ship-service transformers and three single-phase banked distribution transformers for harsh commercial marine market
  • Large multi-phase transformers to meet MIL-STD-1399, Section 300 harmonic requirements (<5%THD and single harmonic <3%)
  • Multi-output phase-shifted transformers for reduced input line current harmonics
