Thordon Bearings

Thordon Bearings - Pollution-Free Stern Tube Bearings, Rudder Bearings and Deck Equipment

Thordon Bearings, Inc. is a leading designer and manufacturer of pollution-free propeller shaft, rudder and deck-equipment bearings and bushings. Products include Thordon's COMPAC, SXL, XL and Composite propeller-shaft bearings, Thordon's SXL self-lubricating pintle, stock and carrier rudder bearings, Thorseal rudder stock seals, Thor-Coat shaft coating, and Thordon's SeaThigor shaft seals, stabilizer fins and pump bearings.

Thordon possesses over 30 years of experience, and offers worldwide technical support through an extensive sales, distribution and service network.

PROPELLER-SHAFT / STERN TUBE BEARINGS

Thordon offers several proven propeller-shaft and stern tube bearing options, each offering specific advantages in different water environments and operating conditions. Over 700 water-lubricated propeller-shaft bearing installations, and comprehensive recorded bearing-wear data, continue to prove that Thordon bearings provide both the lowest overall life-cycle operating costs, and increased propulsion-system reliability.

BENEFITS OF THORDON PROPELLER-SHAFT BEARINGS

  • Excellent operational and wear performance
  • Reduced breakaway torque
  • Lower acoustic signature
  • Ease of maintenance
  • Survivability (non-catastrophic failure mode)

COMPAC PROPELLER-SHAFT BEARING SYSTEM

With over 25 years of experience using the proven principles of water lubrication, Thordon's COMPAC propeller-shaft bearing system is a simple and reliable system for 'blue water' operating conditions. Specially formulated with a low coefficient of friction to reduce startup friction and eliminate stick-slip, COMPAC's unique configuration promotes early formation of a hydrodynamic film at lower propeller-shaft rpm.

Thordon COMPAC is the proven and best choice for propeller-shaft bearings, and is currently used by Armada Argentina frigates, ANZAC frigates, Brazilian Navy corvettes, Canadian Navy frigates, Chinese Navy destroyers, Danish Navy large patrol craft, Indian Coast Guard patrol craft, Korean Navy KDX frigates, Royal Thai Navy destroyers, South African Navy MEKO frigates, Swedish Navy patrol craft, Turkish Navy frigates, US Coast Guard cutters, US Navy T-AKE support ships, and many others.

THORDON SXL

Thordon SXL is designed to offer increased resistance to third-particle abrasive wear, and improved wear-life in operating conditions that have slightly more abrasives than 'blue water' operation. SXL offers a low coefficient of friction, for reduced break away tourque and smoother operation at lower shaft rpm.

THORDON XL

Thordon XL is designed to offer resistance to third-particle abrasive wear, and improved wear-life in rough operating conditions (such as those experienced by ice breakers).

THORDON COMPOSITE BEARINGS

Thordon Composite bearings, operating in combination with hard coated nickel-chrome-boron sleeves, are specially formulated to provide superior wear-life in very abrasive water conditions, and have proven their ability to last at least twice as long as rubber bearings. The US Navy currently uses Thordon Composite bearings in its 1600 Class landing-craft units.

SXL RUDDER BEARINGS

Reliability, proven performance and superior customer service has made Thordon the logical choice in rudder bearings for over 30 years. With over 4,000 rudder bearings installed, Thordon's self-lubricating SXL pintle, stock and carrier disc bearings offer a low coefficient of friction, providing total freedom from grease for all rudder bearing applications both above and below the waterline.

BENEFITS OF SXL RUDDER BEARINGS

  • Proven long-bearing wear-life
  • Dry or water lubrication eliminates greasing-system
  • Ability to withstand shock-loading and vibration

THORPLAS® THERMOPLASTIC BEARING

ThorPlas®, a newly engineered, grease-free thermoplastic bearing, is recommended for the more highly-loaded bushings in rudder steering linkage applications, such as tiller arm and 'jockey-bar' linkages.

Thordon also offers durable Thorseal rudder stock seals designed to provide exceptional wear-life and positive sealing, as well as accommodate larger bearing clearances and movements associated with rudder stocks.

THOR-COAT SHAFT COATING

Thor-Coat was specifically developed to provide corrosion protection for a minimum ten-year period. Thor-Coat therefore eliminates the problems caused by current shaft-coating systems, which are not sufficiently reliable to allow an extension of shaft withdrawal periods beyond five years.
